The Role: A Junior Designer at Hibner contributes to several design projects from start to finish, and is responsible for project deliverables as well as assisting with maintaining the project schedule. They are tasked with collaborating with the project managers and design team members on design presentations, as well as project concepting, development, and execution. They should have experience with space planning, finish selection, product/furniture specification, and budgeting. An ideal Junior Designer is a highly motivated, proactive self-starter who has a strong sense of urgency and follow-through who loves all things interiors and design. In this role, it’s critical to proactively research things that you don’t know or aren’t sure of. The Junior Designer has excellent customer service skills – courteous, professional, kind, and timely, and brings a positive, easy-going attitude.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Project Management
    • Contribute to taking projects from start to finish, working on all steps along the way and requiring little supervision
    • Add updates and revised details to project plans and Excel budgets as instructed and as changes occur
  • Design Work
    • Maintain brand consistency throughout all documents, presentations and design
    • Maintain / and keep all project related binders and documents organized and up-to-date with latest revisions
    • Responsible for having some experience in the following (but not limited to): Design, Procurement, Specification Submission and all other design phases
    • Support creating a pre-install checklist
    • Explore and vet new/existing furniture/fabrics/material vendors suitable for scope of work
    • Assist with the creation of preliminary FFE budgets with approval and assistance from Studio Manager
    • Help prepare toolkits for day of installation (in collaboration with Logistics & Operations team)
    • Support the preparation of design presentations with design direction given by project design lead
    • Assist with creating purchase orders with correct details for efficient procurement, then collaborate with purchasing to execute

Technical Skills Desired

  • Knowledge of Revit and experience in AutoCAD
  • Familiarity in Google Suite, InDesign, Photoshop, BlueBeam, and SketchUp
  • Familiarity with communication and project management software such as Hangouts, Zoom, and/or GoToMeeting

Design Skills Desired

  • Some hand sketching experience
  • Some experience with design process, principles, construction methods, and creating detailed construction drawings with proper notation for permit
  • Desire to learn how to source from trade-only and artisan/maker resources and designing custom furniture. You stay on top of all the latest modern/contemporary designers, vendors, products
  • Design sensibility that resonates with our portfolio of work and the ability to adapt to client needs and any design style

Job-Related Performance Skills Desired

  • Solid communication skills (clear, proactive, direct, and frequent for both written and verbal) to interface with vendors, contractors, clients, teammates
  • Highly organized with ability to breakdown a large project into smaller tasks and sequence the tasks appropriately
  • Excellent attention to detail – you double check your work and learn from mistakes
  • Time management skills – knowing how much effort and time to put into the different priorities at hand. You don’t waste time on or present things that won’t work budget-wise or functionally
  • Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to be a team player and think big picture “holistically” like an owner
  • Refined design aesthetic
  • Professional / creative / polished appearance
  • Proven ability to be self-reliant and demonstrate a high level of professional maturity

Qualifications Preferred

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Interior Design
  • NCIDQ or CID certified
  • Minimum of 2 – 3 years experience
  • Able to stand for extended periods to handle various project-related installation tasks (such as lifting light fixtures, using a ladder, etc.) and other physical duties related to the position
  • Willing and able to travel regionally and potentially overnight on average 20% of the time
  • Valid Driver’s License, reliable transportation, with clean driving record and auto insurance to get to/from client sites
  • Authorized to work in the United States – we do not sponsor
