DESCRIPTION: Knowing how color is commonly used in commercial design projects is a helpful approach to selecting color for a new or renovation building project. Considering how much time we spend in commercial spaces such as restaurants, healthcare facilities, workplace environments, schools, and hospitality accommodations, it makes sense to create spaces that are appealing as well as functional. This course examines paint in terms of product performance, discusses how humans instinctively react to color, and provides some guidelines for selecting paint colors for commercial design projects. OBJECTIVES: At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1) summarize the leading considerations of using paint in commercial design, including health and wellness, product performance, safety, and cost, 2) explain how color associations can go beyond a human emotional response to include mental and directional associations, and objective and subjective impressions, 3) examine how different generations respond to color and recognize how some health problems and aging can alter or interfere with color perception, 4) identify color trends and themes for exterior and interior commercial projects, and 5) appraise examples and discuss general color tips for selecting paint for commercial projects to ensure quality of life aspects such as comfort, social interaction, wayfinding/orientation, healing, or productivity are achieved.
